Savor the season : Cheers without the tears. (Copy)

Alcohol has become so intertwined with our idea of “celebration” that it can feel like the holidays might lose a bit of sparkle without it. But is that really true? This season, let’s reframe what brings us joy.

Drinks don’t actually bring us the happiness, laughter, or fun we think they do.

It’s the people, the lights, the smells, the traditions, and the music that fill the season with magic.

All of those sensory memories tied to emotions that cue you dopamine to think “alcohol is on the way.”

Often, it’s those small, heartfelt moments that stay with us most, unfortunately, you have associated most of your best memories with alcohol. The good news is, even when the alcohol goes, the other parts are still there more vibrant than every before.

The first holidays without alcohol truly is like being a kid all over again.

I know childhood holiday’s aren’t great memories for everyone. But I’m sure there was a little twinkle in you r heart, when you saw the first snow fall, or the Christmas music on the radio.

That wonder and awe is still there, it’s just been buried by the powerful chemical response of alcohol.

You get to have joy without consequence.

The tears you will shed this year, are deep tears of relief.

You no longer need to live this way.

It will be new, but life has your back.

My first sober Christmas felt like the biggest gift to myself, really horning my children and my relationships.

Now, I can’t imagine drinking and enjoying any of it.

There is so much more meaning and connection than even when I was a kid.

We have new traditions and make memories we get to keep.

I can remember every year my son grows older, rather than fuzzy details.

When we look at it that way, we realize alcohol doesn’t add joy; it just changes our perception.

Try creating a list of what actually makes you feel happy during the holidays.

Maybe it’s cozy nights in, baking cookies, laughing with friends, or even just listening to your favorite holiday songs. By rediscovering what we actually love about the season, we create a new kind of holiday joy, one that’s real and fulfilling.
