Old Relationships, New You

Familial relationships are the most challenging to navigate for a reason; they teach us the most about ourselves.
They are our first relationships of relating to the world through the lens of the other.
They mirror our very existence.
When your awareness grows, it often changes your opinion and preferences.
This is when the work of self-inquiry takes the next level:
Can you hold just as much self-validation and compassion for the other as you have for yourself?

We start the process of changing our relationship to alcohol by offering love to that which we have been avoiding.
This is the other side of the Love/Hate relationship to alcohol.
It's the Love/Love relationship, and it cancels it's self out.
You have to be willing to love yourself so hard, offer compassion for every facet of being human, walk directly into the eye of the storm that is triggering the emotion and simply ask, why?
What's going on here?

Triggers come when your way of being is invalidated in some way.
Your thoughts interpret a circumstance that creates the emotions of LACK, Insufficiency.
It doesn't mean it's true, it's just connecting old and new pathways of relating to the world.
There becomes a momentary short circuit and fight or flight kicks in.

When you have been doing the work inward of emotional intimacy, triggers become less scary.

When you have anchored into your truth of deep knowing, alcohol is no longer serving me,
you have a foundation to come back to again and again.

You can compare your thoughts that create instability and bring them back, one at a time.
You can hold space for an old perspective with a new lens.
You can invite love in, for love’s sake, free of the condition.

In this week's podcast episode, I share a personal story of this very thing happening to me in relation to my own Mother. It was a powerful moment of growth for me. I am excited to share my process with you.

With love,
Mary
